"中秋节” is Mid-Autumn festival in China. It follows the lunar calendar and is on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of each year. This year's 中秋节 falls on September 27th. It is a Sunday so the SK 5-6th and 7-8th Mandarin students put festival greetings up on the fence with red cups on Friday. Check it out when you drive by or come to Summers-Knoll for pickups. This week the 3rd/4th grade class started to know the main character of an Chinese children's story: 小蝌蚪. It is a classic story that was made into a short film illustrated in traditional water-and-ink style. The 3rd/4th graders made colorful crafts to show their understanding of the living environment of the little tadpoles. In the process of making the artwork, they searched for ways to communicate to and work with group members. The 1st and 2nd grade Mandarin students had their first week of class. We focused on introducing the class routine that is conducted in Mandarin, and how we should treat the classmates so we can work well in the class. I also started to do a circle game to practice asking and introducing a person's name. Routine building and rote practice serve as a basic structure that we can add on to going forward. Each student started a file folder to organize their work. The sentence written on the cover is: "我叫......” The blank space is where the student's name goes. The 7th-8th grade learners have started the first page of a illustrated journal by a (recently) well-know illustrator in China.
The journal is this illustrator's way of recording her experience of a sudden sickness, her reflections of herself and people around her, and hospital procedures. It is humorous, optimistic, and touching. The photo here shows the acting and narrating from one pair of students. |
